There are a few ways to go about fact checking information from AI tools. When crafting your prompt, be sure to frame your question in a way that does not lean toward a specific view, as AI tools are often designed to give you an answer you want to see, rather than what may be true. Ask AI tools to cite their sources to see where it might be supposedly getting its information. AI tools might “hallucinate” or generate false citations, however, so it is always good to verify that the citations received from AI tools are real sources. Finally, referring to the original source is a key component of fact-checking AI, as sometimes these tools might pull from a legitimate resource, but lack the ability to contextualize the original source or could potentially pull from the wrong part of it. Be wary too of the biases of the original sources, and do not take any piece of AI-generated information at face value. If you are still unsure of the accuracy of a claim from an AI tool, please contact one of the Belmont librarians, who would be happy to verify the accuracy of that information.
