ChatGPT and other AI tools sometimes have a tendency to “hallucinate” or generate fake citations in its responses. These may often include seemingly real information (such as author, publication title, etc.), but are not necessarily real materials and were likely created based on a broader association of that author or publication to the topic of the AI user’s inquiry. A few good places to check for these articles would be OneSearch, Scopus, or Google Scholar. If there are aspects of the citation that might be real, you might check to see if you can find a list of that author’s publications or find that journal the article ChatGPT recommended claims to originate from. For specific inquiries, please contact one of the Belmont librarians, who would be happy to verify the location of that article.
